The Wicked Truth About Love

Make Love Not War

There's an old expression about making love and not war that makes us think about flower children and sexual freedom. But I read an article about something that happened at the end of WWII about transforming enemies into friends and I began to think about that old phrase differently. American and Japanese soldiers, the worst of enemies, worked together to build and earth-fill dam in the days after the war in the Pacific ended and surpised themselves at how quickly hatred turned to respect and friendship. Maybe the kind of love that contrasts with war is not sexual but is still bodily and active. It might be the kind of love that requires that we spend time with someone, work together or play together and allow that person to be themselves and not some projection of our needs, fears or prejudices. That kind of love can work its magic with all types of relationships. Here's a link to the article -- the author doesn't mention love, but I think that's what he's talking about. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/04/opinion/04florman.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=the%20pacific%20campaign,%20dam%20division&st=cse
